The project

One of the major challenges Europe will face in the coming decades is to make its energy system clean, secure and efficient while ensuring EU industrial leadership in low-carbon energy technologies. WASTE2FUELS aims to develop next generation biofuel technologies capable of converting unavoidable agrofood waste (AFW) streams into high quality biobutanol for use as a direct substitution for virgin fossil fuels. Butanol is one of the most promising biofuels due to its superior fuel properties which enable its use as direct transportation fuel with greater blend amounts with gasoline or diesel with little or no engine modifications, as compared to bioethanol and biodiesel, which are the main biofuels at the moment.
